Tofutti Pan Crust Pizza Pizzazz: With a name like that, you can’t go wrong, right?
At least that’s what I was hoping, having already suffered through an ill-conceived rice-crust vegan pizza brand that glomped all over the inside of the oven.
I don’t eat fake pizza much anymore because pizza with most of the ingredients missing can taste about as you expect. If I’m being strictly macrobiotic, tomatoes are out too! Naturally I crave it every so often, but if I don’t want to suffer, I need to get the dairy-free kind.
I’ve had Tofutti products before: Their Better Than Cream Cheese, their Sour Supreme (sour cream) and their “ice cream” Cuties, which really are. One of the big problems I have with their product lines is the presence of partially hydrogenated soybean oil. They make no pretence to being anything other than dairy free, after all. Alas, sometimes a girl gets desperate for her old way of living and isn’t up to making her own Tofu Sour Cream like a smart person.
But we’re talking about the quest for a tasty dairy-free pizza, which is why I tried Pizza Pizzazz. “That’s a somma pizza!” the box cries, promizing a great “pizza parlour taste” despite it having no butterfat, no cholesterol, and milk free cheese. I did notice that the actual picture of the pizza takes up only 1/5 of the box, but life is about trying new things, isn’t it?
The look: A rectangular slab.
The process: Bake it longer at lower heat as they suggest
The taste: Not bad!
Whether it was the crispy crust that sealed the deal, the rather delicious dairy free cheese topping or the combination brought together by oven magic, I enjoyed what came out. Will I keep looking for other brands? Sure. But if I want a quick fix in the future, I’ll probably get this brand again.
