Don’t get me wrong: I love tater tots. I love my childhood memories of fish sticks. I love batter. But when you’re trying to be macrobiotic the way I am, and running up against the dreaded need-something-quick-and-convenient evenings, I was happy to see this new kind of frozen fish sticks in our local Sendik’s.
Enter the fabulous Starfish brand. Enter crispy, battered haddock, golden brown on the outside and wonderfully tender & flaky on the inside, baked right in our toaster oven. It’s not inexpensive but it’s amazingly tasty, and downright perfect for this macrobiotic on the go.
Even non-macrobiotics in the household will unexpectedly love them (and eat your pieces if you don’t watch out). And even non-fish eaters; I call Mr. Ecoquisitive to the stand as a case in point.
Besides haddock, you can also get cod and halibut. You can also get them gluten-free, wheat-free, egg-free, milk-free, soy-free, nut-free; just check the box.
I’m usually a cod eater, but to me the haddock tastes superior. “Gluten” also doesn’t bother me, but again, the gluten-free version tastes better. I usually dip them in Vegenaise or safflower mayonnaise in lieu of tartar sauce.
Have you tried it? Do you like it? Are you categorically against fish-in-a-box of all kinds?
